2012- 2013 Volleyball Reflection

After 2 months of hard work, I am proud to call myself a 4 time ISAC volleyball champion! This year's ISAC tournament was a very successful one and it was a good way to end my volleyball career at Brent. In the first day of the tournament our team played British School Manila and Brent International School Subic. We won won both game however they were not easy games and after the first day we realized that we were not yet at our full potential. During the second day of the tournament our team played Brent International School Manila, Faith Academy Mindanao and Cebu International School. Though we were faced with 3 games in one day I personally saw an improvement in the way my team and myself played. we won all three games fairly easily with straight set victories. On the third day of the tournament we faced Southville International Schools and Colleges for the last game in the elimination round. Once again we proved to be a better team and won the game with a straight set victory. During the Semi- finals our team again faced Brent Manila and we won the game easily. During the semi-finals game I can say that our team played at a very high level and that we achieved the victory the way we wanted too. For the championship match we faced Faith and this game proved to be our best game in the tournament. We were able to execute all our plays and had a blow out win to achieve our 4th consecutive ISAC championship.

I have to say that I am very pleased with the way I played in this tournament and I feel that I comfortably achieved my personal goals for this season. In all of our games I felt that I saw a significant improvement in my skills particularly in spiking. I also improved with my collaboration skills because I noticed that i was very vocal in the games throughout the tournament. Overall, I feel that this is one of the best seasons I have had in my 5 years of playing volleyball and I also feel that it was a successful CAS activity.

"SLAM! Baguio" Proposal

Timeline: October 2012- March 2013

Description: This CAS activity will be a very new experience for me and will fall under creativity. In this activity myself and a few other seniors will create and manage an online magazine that will focus on the athletics and sports in school. The online magazine will feature all three sports seasons (volleyball, basketball , Soccer) in school. The members of the group will be responsible for different tasks such as taking photos of the athletes, managing the web design for the website and I will be responsible for taking interviews and interacting with the athletes and coaches of the different sports teams. So far I have already interviewed a few of the volleyball members.

For this CAS activity my goals are to get valuable information from the athletes and coaches to make the website interesting and entertaining. This activity will also allow to be more engaged and to educated on the sports that I do not participate in. I also plan to work on my collaborative skills as I have interactions with the different athletes around school.

Volleyball Update #2 (2012-2013)

With just about one more training week left, we are nearing the peak of our skills in time for the ISAC tournament. In these last few training sessions we will polish on our skills that need more work and play a few more tune- up games so that we can practice the new plays that we have worked on and accustom ourselves to playing with different line- ups. 

Throughout the season I have been working hard on the goals I have set for myself and I can see an improvement in them. Looking at my personal volleyball goals such as improving my attack, I feel that I have made an improvement and am more flexible attacking in the different positions on the court. I also feel that I have improved on my leadership and cooperative skills on the team because I am one of the more vocal players on the court. I have learned throughout the season that communication is a very important tool in volleyball as with other sports and the improvement I have made in this area has benefited my team as much as myself.  

Volleyball Update #1 (2012-2013)

Since the beginning of the season last August my teammates and I have improved on our skills and gotten used to playing volleyball again after a year without playing the sport. So far we are down to 12 players from the 16 that we began with and will soon be cutting the team down to 10 for ISAC. Until this point in the season we have played 1 game against UC high school and fortunately we claimed a victory. Though the team has made major improvements , we still have a lot of work to do before the October ISAC tournament in Cebu.

So far I can say that i have improved on my personal goals in volleyball. In the beginning of the season I made my offensive skills a major goal of mine and up to now I have felt an improvement. However, I feel that I can continue to improve my attacking skills and my overall volleyball skills for ISAC. I have also been working on my collaborative skills by being one of the more vocal players on the team and being a key player in lifting my team up when we are losing games.

I hope that my team and I will continue to improve in the 1 month that we have left before the tournament so that we can be more confident in our 4th consecutive journey to a championship.

2012-2013 Volleyaball Proposal

Time: August 8- October 15 2012

This CAS activity will once again mark the beginning of the school year and sports season. For this year's volleyball season the team will once again be training for the whole school week from 3-5pm. We will once again be preparing for the ISAC tournament which will be held in Cebu International School this year. During the season, we will once again partake in smaller tournaments such as Brent Cup which will test our improvements from our training.

For this CAS activity I will once again try to improve all my skills that concern the sport. I will try to improve on my collaborative skills, commitment and perseverance and also learning new skills.

During last year's volleyball season one personal goal that I was trying to achieve was my defensive skills such as blocking andreceiving. After working very hard to these skills I improved significantly on them which helped me win the Most Valuable Player award. This year I would like to improve on my offensive skills such as spiking so that together with my improved defensive skills I can be a better all around player.

CAS progress Self- Evaluation

Do you have a balance of activities across the three areas: Creativity, Action, Service? If not, in which area do you need more involvement?

During the first year of the two year CAS program I had multiple activities that were categorized under all 3 areas. However, more of my activities were involved with action and service and less under creativity. This year I will partake in more activities under creativity.

Over the past year, did you average about 3-4 hours per week on different CAS activities?

Over the past year I averaged 3-4 hours per week and more during sports seasons. When I was not involved with sports I partook in other activities such as the "Children With White Coats" activity which lasted roughly 2-3 hours on weekends.

Have you collaborated with others on any CAS projects? Which ones and in what way?

I have collaborated with others in most of my CAS projects such as in sports teams and outreach programs such as the "Anteg- In Literacy" program. In these activities I would have to work together with other people to perform different tasks such as reading out loud to children and more.

Have you engaged with any issues of global importance in any CAS activities? If so, what issue?

A few of the activities that I joined were related to many global issues such as global literacy and education which were connected to the Anteg- In projects and global healthcare which were related to the dental and medical missions I joined.

Would you describe your level of engagement with that global issue as low, moderate, or high? (Did you become an expert in that area, could you explain the local situation around that issue to someone, did you just become acquainted with the issue?)

I would describe my level of engagement to the global issues as moderate. I have become acquainted with these different issues and can explain how they are in the different local situations.

What is one issue of global importance (check the list HERE) that you wanted to get involved with but you haven't had the opportunity to do so?

One issue of global importance that I wanted to get involved with is natural disaster prevention and mitigation.

Which activity from last year was the most meaningful to you? Why?

The activity from last year which was most meaningful to me was the Anteg- In Literacy project. This project was very meaningful to me because it is associated with helping improve education for all, which I believe is a very important global issue. This activity was also important because it helped me improve my collaborative skills which was one of my goals.

Which activity did you not care for or was not very significant to you? Why?

All of the activities that I participated in last year were significant to me because they all addressed global issues that I was interested in and they all helped me reach my personal goals for the CAS program.

What is one thing that you planned to do at the beginning of G11 that you have not begun yet?

One thing that I planned to do at the beginning of G11 that I haven't begun yet was to initiate and plan my very own CAS activity.

Children With White Coats Proposal

Time: 9am- 12pm

Supervisor: Mrs. Catherine Wright

For this CAS activity we will be going to the Anteg- In elementary school to conduct lab experiments with the children in the community. We will bring along with us materials needed for the lab experiments and conduct interactive experiments with the children. We will then lead a short discussion on the scientific principles behind the experiments and hopefully further the children's education on these scientific matters.

For this CAS activity I will focus on once again improving my collaborative skills by helping and explaining procedures to the participating children as well as working with my group mates. With this activity I will also try to improve on my communicating skills particularly speaking in other languages and dialects. If I can accomplish  these goals the activity will prove to be a great success because these goals are what I lack.

Basketball Reflection

Throughout this year's basketball season our team went through a lot of good and bad times and personally I can say that I grew in many aspects of my personal life. In the beginning of the season I set many personal goals and goals as a team and now that the season is over I can proudly say that I achieved many of these goals.

As our team travelled down to the ISAC tournament, which was the last and most important event of the season I had many doubts about my team and myself that was put to the test during the tournament. First of all, because we had a few losses in some of our games I doubted the thought that we could excel in ISAC. As the tournament began, I was also questioning if I had improved my personal skills in basketball, my cooperative skills and leadership skills which were my main goals for this season. During the first game of the day we played against Brent Subic which was the host of the tournament. During this game there were many questionable calls by the referees and other officials and despite this our team did not play as well as we could and sadly we lost the game by 17 points. After this game the whole deep was demoralized and I personally felt that we did not have a chance in the tournament. After the loss, I questioned myself leadership skills because though I kept my composure throughout the game it felt like I did not do enough to get my other team mates to focus and get back in the game. After clearing my mind from a bad loss I made it a goal for myself to be as optimistic I could throughout the tournament. During our second game we played European INternational School which was a much weaker team. We started of with an early lead and everyone was regaining confidence in themselves and the team. During the first quarter one of our key players who was also the team captain was badly injured and had to leave the game. Despite the loss of a player, I saw this as an opportunity to step up and lead the team to continue playing well and fortunately I was able to do this and we finished the game on a high note. Just when we felt like we were back into contending for top seed I had to miss the next game along with my injured team mate to get x- rays for our injuries. Once again my team lost the final game of that day, leaving us with a 1 win- 2 loss record and a decrease in morale.

In the following day, we had 2 win or die games with two of the strongest teams in the tournament which were British School Manila and Southville INternational Schools and Colleges. Once again I saw this as a opportunity to work on my collaborative skills and the skills I improved throughout the season to secure 2 very vital wins. Fortunately, we were able to win in overtime against BSM and we blew Southville out by 30 points. These wins in the second day gave us more confidence in ourselves and gave us a higher chance of making the playoffs.

In the third and final game of the day we had one more game of the elimination round against Faith Academy Mindanao which we needed to win to secure us a spot in the playoffs. Luckily, early in the game I caught fire and drained most of the jump shots which was a skill I was working hard on during the season because it was something I lacked last season. Once again we won the game by many points and secured the second seed entering the playoffs. When the semi- finals came around, we were going to play BSM in a door die game wherein the winner made the finals game. Before the game I was quite nervous because BSM is the school that beat us in the finals a year before and this team usually comes out to play very hard in the playoffs. During this game, everyone stepped up and our team played with extreme composure and we were able to win the game by 5 points. We went to the finals with Brent Subic and sadly we lost by two points. However, despite everything that happened in that finals game I took it as a source of determination and inspiration to work even harder the next year to surely win my last ISAC tournament. The painful loss was very humbling experience that will spark the intensity out of my team and I next season.

Overall, despite only getting second place for 2 consecutive years I feel that with this CAS activity and sports season I achieved the most from the goals I set and I am still proud of what I have done for my team.

Basketball Update # 1

Now on the 4th week of the season the basketball team is well familiar with the new program. The players are now accustomed to their new roles on the team and everyone is improving each practice. Since formal training began we have had two games against Mt. Carmel and the University of Baguio and we won one and lost one. During the first game, I was able to score 29 points and grab 17 rebounds however it was not enough and we fell short and lost by 2 points. In the second game however, we were able to blow out a much better team by around 30 points. So far, I feel that I have worked well on my goals such as being a better leader on the team and guiding my team mates though at times it may have been very stressful and disappointing. As for my individual skills, I feel that I have been improving but I also feel that I have a lot more work to do so that I can be at my peak before the ISAC competition. The team has also been doing activities off the basketball court to help us improve on our overall knowledge on the sport such as game review days wherein we watch our games and discuss what we need to improve on. In the following days to come we have more games and a trip down to Pangasinan for a one day tournament against local players in the area. I hope these upcoming experiences will continue to help us improve as a team and as individuals to better our chances at winning ISAC this season.

Basketball Proposal (Road to Redemption)

Timeline: January 25- March 21

Description: This CAS activity will be similar to the activity I participated in during the first half of the school year wherein I was a member of the varsity volleyball team however this time I will be a member of the school's varsity basketball team. I have been a member of the basketball team since the 9th grade and I consider it as my number one sport. Like all the other school teams, the basketball team has been joining the ISAC competition which is at the end and is the most important tournament of the season. During last year's ISAC tournament our basketball team performed significantly well considering how we won all of our games and unfortunately only lost in the finals against British School Manila. This season's ISAC tournament will be held in Brent Subic and hopefully the team will once again be a solid contender and will this time win the championships which is something that we have been wanting to do since the end of last year's season.

This CAS activity will be under the action group and during this season I have set many goals for myself as well as our team. Personally, as being one of the veteran players on the team I want to improve my leadership and collaborative skills to further bring the team together which is one of the most important things to accomplish if we intend on winning this year. Team work was something we lacked last season which was a contributing factor to our championship loss. Also I aim to improve on my personal skills in the sport and overall become a better and more well- rounded athlete and basketball player. Hopefully, we will win this year.

Anteg-IN Literacy Project Reflection

The literacy project that I was a member of wherein a group of students visited the Anteg- In elementary school to assist children to learn and improve literacy skills was a great experience. During this CAS project I was able to learn many new things about teaching because this was my first time to partake in this type of activity. In this project I was able to greatly improve my collaborative skills more especially with children which I find quite difficult.

Though I was only able to go a few times I feel that I am now more able to communicate and collaborate with people more easily. One of my goals was in this CAS activity was to learn more about global issues such as global literacy among children and through this experience, I was able to learn many things in improving this issue by learning different methods of helping children with literacy skills. I learned that it only takes simple approaches such as reading short stories and having children write was a great way to do this. Also I became more aware of this topic that is present in many areas around the world and realized that access to education is very important. I felt that the project was very successful and I would happily participate in a similar activity in this future.
