Anteg- In Literacy Project Proposal

Saturday, November 19, 2o11 ----
8:45am- 12:00pm

For this CAS activity I will be joining a group of several students every Saturday for about 1 month to Anteg- In elementary school along Ambuklao Road to hold reading activities with the students from the school. For this activity we will be reading story books aloud to children ages 12 and below to further help them improve on their reading/ literacy skills. Besides reading we will also initiate other activities such as drawing, reading games and more.

In this activity I hope to learn more about the different methods in which we can teach children how to read and to improve their different academic skills. I also intend to become more aware of the ways children become to interested to learn besides simply reading and writing but through fun activities and more.

For this Cas activity I will again have the opportunity to undertake new challenges because this will be my first time to partake in this type of activity. I hope to improve on my collaborative skills by collaborating with fellow students and the children we will work with. Also through this activity I intend to learn more about global issues such as global literacy and education.

MARCOS HIGHWAY DENTAL MISSION reflection

After completing a long day of working in the dental mission we were able to serve a total of 92 patients. In the first part of the 4 hour long dental mission I was put[ in charge of carrying the boxes of dental supplies such as the dental instruments and the food that was to be distributed to the patients. When the transferring of the boxes was finished I was then put in charge of distributing the prescribed medicines and antibiotics to the patients. This task was quite challenging because I needed to communicate to the patients about what kind of medicine they needed and when they needed to take them. This became even harder because I needed to distribute a different type of medicine for children and adults and it got very confusing at some points. However, while doing this task I was able to improve on my communication skills and working collaboratively with others. When the tooth extractions were over I also needed to help out with cleaning up the instruments and packing everything away for the next mission. Overall, this was a very good experience because I worked well on my communication skills and I learned many new things such as treatments for oral infections and more through talking to the dentists at work.

Marcos Highway Dental Mission

Saturday, October 29, 2011
9:00 am - 12:00pm

This activity that I will participate in is a dental mission organized by the Philippine Dental Association. The dental mission will include tooth extractions for people of all ages and other dental services that will be provided by the dentists attending and a few other volunteers. Also distribution of different medicines to patients will take place.

In this particular activity I hope to learn more about how the different processes of minor dental surgery are done. I want to learn more about how tooth extractions in particular are performed. In this activity I will be in charge of cleaning the dental tools after use and also taking blood pressures of the different patients.

This will only be my second time to take part in a dental mission and this will be an opportunity for me to undertake new challenges. Hopefully I will again I will improve on working collaboratively will others and to engage in global issues particularly improving public health and sanitation by improving oral hygiene .

Volleyball Evalutation

3-Peat!!! After a long 2 moth volleyball season all the hard work has finally paid off with another championship title for the Brent Baguio Boys Volleyball Team!!!!!

The highly awaited ISAC tournament occurred last October 5-9 in Brent International School Manila.

DAY 1
In the first day of the competition we faced the host team, Brent Manila, for our fist game and fortunately we were able to win with a straight set victory. Our second game of day was against Cebu International School Manila. This team was sort of a weaker team than the first one however we struggled a little more in attaining our win because we committed quite a few mistakes during the game. However the win was also a straight set victory. Our final game for the first day of competition was against Faith Academy Mindanao. Our volleyball was caught in surprise because this team wasn't known to be a very good team however, they made a significant improvement. Once again with out strong teamwork and putting our skills into play we were able to capture the victory quite easily.

Day 2
The second day of competition seemed to be a more intense day because we were going to face better teams in the tournament. Our first game for that day was against British School Manila. This team also improved quite a lot from last year's tournament and again a harder task of defending our winning streak was placed upon us. Once again with our team work and the help of our coach we captured the win in another straight set victory. The second game of the day was against 2nd ranked Brent Subic. We faced Brent Subic in the finals during last year's ISAC tournament and we were able to beat them. This game was said to be one of the most anticipated game of the tournament because it was against the 2 power houses of ISAC Volleyball. During the first set of the game our team was trailing by five or six points. Fortunately, our coach made a strategic time- out and with it our team was able to pick up momentum and come back to win the first set. In the second set the score was very close with both our team and the subic team scoring. However, because we showed that we were a harder working team and that we had more heart we were able to win the second set thus making taking the win in another straight- set game. Our final game for the day was against a much weaker team, Southville. Though we won the first set, it was very disappointing because we made the opposing team score 20 points on us because our team got over confident and lost focus on the game. However in the second set our coach spoke to us about making a better effort and we blew Southville out, winning the second set and the game with a score 25-9. After this game we sealed our number 1 rank on the standings and the next day was the play-offs.

Day 3
Our first game on the third day of competition was the semi- finals match to see who would enter the championship game. We played the 4th seed Faith Academy team and we were able to win with another straight- set victory. I found this game to be one of my best games personally because I was able to execute many powerful attacks. I also feel that I performed well on defense because I made multiple blocks and received many of their attacks. After the victory of that game we were on our way to the championship game for the third consecutive year and for the second straight year it was going to be against Brent Subic. Our team was very excited to play this game especially for our seniors Elroi Caluya and Karl Torento who would have this game as their last for their high school lives.

THE FINALS
This year's finals match wa by far the most intense game I have ever played in my life. In the first set of the game we found ourselves down once again with the score being 23- 17. Our coach called a time out and told each one of us that indeed we are a better team and we have more passion and determination to win. After the time out was made we went back on the playing court with more determination to win and we came back from a six point deficit to win the first set. In the second set we found our selves in trouble after committing countless errors and unfortunately we got our first lost set of the tournament. Going into the third set each member of our volleyball team was very exhausted however we still had the burning desire to win. We were once again trailing most of the set however with one final time out from our coach we were able to catch up and turn things around. We tied the score at 24 all and fortunately the opponents committed a service error. This lead us up by one point . As my team mate served the ball the opposing team tried executing their play. As the spiker approached to go for the kill I also approached with intentions to block his attack. When he spiked it i quickly jumped up to block it and as the ball hit the ground everyone began to jump around in celebration as we won our third consecutive championship.

Throughout the course of the tournament and particularly the finals match I learned many valuable lessons. First of all, I learned that no matter what the score is you should never give up and keep pushing yourself towards the win. I also learned that with perseverance and hard work it is not possible to achieve even the hardest or goals. With this tournament I also developed special relationships with my team mates and we grew into a brotherhood of boys sharing special interests. This ISAC tournament will be one that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Volleyball Update 2

So far the boys varsity volleyball has made many improvements in preparation for ISAC on the 5th-9th of October however the team needs much more work to continue improving and working towards another championship.

Last September 10 Brent Baguio hosted the annual Brent Cup for volley. In this year's Brent Cup there were 4 teams that participated in total which were Baguio City National High, University of the Cordilleras, Saint Louis University and our own boys and girls teams for Brent Baguio. The tournament is not a very big part of the season but is used to see how the boys and girls teams have improved in the past month of training and what areas need more work and polishing in time for the main even which is ISAC.

In this particular tournament our boys team won 2 out of the 3 games that we played however we were not able to play in the finals because of points lacked in the quotient system. In the games that were played I personally saw a great improvement in my teams goals and learning outcomes such as working together and improving our skills. Personally I saw a significant improvement in my receiving skills compared to last year's season. As of now I have also made it my goal to improve on my attacking (spiking) skills because it has not yet reached its full potential. I hope that the team continues to improve as a whole so we once again can win ISAC

Volleyball Proposal

Activity: Varsity Volleyball

Timeline: August 1- October 11

Description: The volleyball season that began last August 1st will be the first sports season for the school year. During the season, the volleyball team will train from 3pm-5pm everyday after school and sometimes on Saturdays for the upcoming ISAC volleyball tournament which will be held in Brent International School Manila. During the season both boys and girls teams will also have tune-up games with schools within the city and will host smaller tournaments such as Brent Cup.

In this year's volleyball season I will hope to learn and improve on the skills that are required in volleyball from the physical skills to psychological and emotional skills. I also hope to win all the games and tournaments within the 2 month season and to achieve the boys volleyball team's third consecutive ISAC championship trophy.

In the process of completing this activity I hope to have worked on increasing awareness of own strengths and areas for growth, working collaboratively with others, shown perseverance and commitment in the activity and developed new skills.

A few personal goals that I am focusing on improving in this season is my volleyball reception skills. This skill is very important to improve because it is one of the most vital skills needed to be mastered to be a good volleyball player. Also during this year's season I am working on increasing my vertical leap to improve my overall athleticism.

Volleyball Update 1

Entering the 4th training week for the volleyball season, the varsity team has begun to make many improvements in the many different areas of the sport. In terms of physicality the team has made many improvements in conditioning, fitness and the improvement of the skills needed to play the sport. The varsity team had a team bonding session on Thursday, September 1st in preparation for the upcoming Brent Cup on the 10th. During the team bonding, the the players were able to discuss issues on and off the court and to talk about aspects that would continue to help build individual relationships and the team's overall well being. Included in the team bonding that was conducted the varsity boys and girls teams also played games and had lunch together. I have also been working on my personal goals for this season which is an improvement in my reception and vertical leap and I feel that I have improved in these skills already however a lot more work has to be done.

Initial Self Review

Copy and paste this into your newly created CAS blog. Title the new page "Initial Self-review".

As part of your CAS requirement you will be asked to write an Initial Self-Review. The questions in this worksheet are designed to give you some “jumping off points” for this written reflection. To be most helpful your answers should focus on basic CAS areas for growth such as physical activity, artistic pursuits, social situations, personal growth, service work, as these will give a better idea on where to focus your future CAS activities.

1. What is your greatest accomplishment so far? How has this affected your life? What did you learn from it?

My greatest accomplishment so far was to pass my driver's test and get my driver's license. It has made me fell more responsible and somehow more mature. I learned that achieving little things such as getting driver's licenses require responsibility and maturity.
2. What are you really good at?

As of now, I don't think there is something that I am really good at. I hope to one day discovery something that i am good at or expand on something that i do now to be very skilled at it such as basketball.
3. Name one skill you have always wanted to develop in your life but that you haven’t yet.

One skill I've always wanted to develop is my cooking skills. I have always been interested with cooking and the different styles and techniques there are and how they are applied.
4. Name one activity that you would like to try but that you haven’t yet. Why would you like to try this?

I would like to one day try sky diving. This activity looks very interesting and accomplishing this will be a real test of my bravery.
5. Name a person you admire right now. What qualities does this person have that you don’t?

One person i admire right now is Nick Vujicic. This person is very inspiring and he has a lot of confidence and courage that I lack.
6. What’s different about you now compared to what you were like when you were 10 years old?

Differentiating myself now from when I was ten years old I would have to say that I am now more aware of things in my environment and that I am now more educated in all aspects of life.
7. Describe the kind of person you think you will be post IB.

Post IB I think I will have matured in every part of my academic and none-academic life and overall I will be more organized, responsible and I will have a better awareness of things around my environment.

ACTION:
1. List any clubs, organizations, sports, or other teams in which you are currently involved which involve ACTION: (varsity or club sports, dance, etc.)

Varsity Basketball

Varsity Volleyball

2. How are you involved—as a participant, as an officer, do you have a leadership role? What gifts or talents do you contribute? Explain your answers for each organization or activity.

In both varsity sports that I am currently involved in, I can say that I play a vital role in the team as a vocal leader. I get the ream together when needed on the court and help make decisions that are important to accomplishing our goals.
3. How committed are you to the activity? Is it a substantial commitment? Does the organization, club, or team involve themselves in substantial, significant endeavors of which you are an active participant? Explain your answers for each organization or activity.

For both varsity basketball and volleyball I see myself as a very committed member. When the sport is in season I rarely miss practice and games and only do when I am sick. I also play these sports when they are not in season to further improve my overall game for the following season. In both sports I play for there are tournaments that are hosted to practice (Brent Cup) for the final tournament which determines our ranking among several international schools in the country (ISAC)
4. What goals have you or will you set for yourself in terms of your performance and endeavors in each of these activities? Are these goals realistic and achievable? For each of the goals, what challenges do you think you might face? What new skills or new skill levels will you develop? Will these goals “stretch” you?
For this years seasons of varsity sports my goal is to win all the competitions we join and become the top seed team and school ISAC. I think these goals are very achievable because they have been done before and realistic because the varsity teams have they potential to complete the goals. In order to achieve these goals however many new skills in these individual sports will need to be developed along with other aspects such as emotional, psychological and physical strength. The goals set will stretch me because if indeed they are achieved, it means that a lot of work and effort in everything that I did was made.
CREATIVITY:
1. Are you involved in any creative or artistic endeavors (orchestra, choir, GANZA, MUN, theater, etc.)? Do you use your creativity in helping to plan events/activities? Explain your answers for each organization or activity.

Currently I am not involved in any artistic endeavors.

3. How committed are you to the activity? Is it a substantial, significant commitment? Do you take an active role in participation? Explain your answers for each organization or activity.
4. What goals have you or will you set for yourself in terms of your performances or creative endeavors in each of these activities? Are these goals realistic and achievable? For each of the goals, what challenges do you think you might face? What new skills or new skill levels will you develop? Will these goals “stretch” you?
